State Tax Concerns & Suggestions From A Long Island Accountant

By Rebecca Mills

It's clear that taxes are integral to a number of facets seen in the real world. When roads are constructed, for instances, taxes are utilized in order to keep that level of work progressing. However, it seems as though taxes are slowly but surely becoming a problem and I didn't quite understand just how serious this was until I came across an article that went into detail about it. After reading said article, I believe that this is a point that every Long Island accountant should focus on.

As told in a report on Businessweek, there are many small business owners that are responsible for taxes that have not been paid. They have also gone into the billions, which is a tremendous piece of news to put it mildly. Another aspect that the article covered was the idea of tax gaps, each of them varied depending on state. In California, for example, there is an amount of $10 billion seen on an annual basis as far as taxes are concerned and, over the next half a decade, $670 million will be utilized for technology purposes.

It's clear that there are certain businesses which owe tremendous amounts as far as taxes are concerned, which is worrisome to say the least. Keep in mind that taxes are needed for many purposes, amongst them being public transportation. If taxes are not paid, what happens to the lives of those who rely on this type of transportation in order to get from home to work and vice versa? It's a legitimate concern for many and one that is easy to relate with to boot.

Fortunately, financial authorities the likes of CFO Consulting Services can attest to the idea that states can crack down more on those who owe ample taxes. One of the ideas that the report went into detail about was the utilization of big data, which has been able to help companies in the past. However, it seems as though tax collectors can make use out of big data as well, which is an important point for any Long Island accountant to address. This usage of data will allow information from places like car dealerships to be more accurate.

Until you start to see the areas in which taxes are used, you may not understand just how important this news really is. The idea of billions dollars in taxes not being paid off is concerning and it is one that, in my view, should be focused on more often. Accountants are not the only ones that should be focusing on the news in question but, in my view, it is a start. If you are a business owner and you do not want to be penalized, it is in your best interest to pay your taxes as soon as possible.
