The Northridge Earthquake

By Maryl Joop

Buying a home is one of the great events in life and it can be an extremely happy time for those who are buying a new home for their first time. But with all the worries and concerns that may already be weighing upon a new homeowner in Frisco, the addition of the new home will only serve to increase the level of concern that one should feel for the protection of their new house and all their possessions within it.

The facts of the Northridge earthquake...

The earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31am. The earthquake lasted for 10-20 seconds but that didn't limit the damage in any substantial way because the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7. This meant that the ground acceleration was measured at 1.7 g. Over 57 people were killed and another 8,700 people were injured. The total cost of the damage was estimated at $20 billion.

The earthquake was so strong that it could be felt as far away as Las Vegas. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Reseda, but before the epicenter could be pinpointed the media had already named the earthquake the Northridge earthquake. Before this earthquake struck, the Northridge blind thrust fault, or the Pico thrust fault, had not been discovered.

Follow the instructions for set up on each of the pieces of equipment that you are using, this way you can be sure that everything is set up safely. While you are looking through the options that you have for exercise equipment, you may want to read the safety information before purchasing. If you are planning on purchasing cardio equipment, it is important that you know how you are going to ventilate your workout room. Having windows put in or even having fans put into the workout room can ensure that you are comfortable as you are exercising.

Fire safety includes remembering to never over load the electrical outlets of the house with more than the recommended number of plugs per one outlet. Over loading outlets is routinely a top causation for house fires every year in the United States.

The number one source for house fires year after year is accidents that lead to fires in the kitchen. With all of the hot appliances, electricity, flammable products, food grease, and heat from the stove and oven, it is not difficult to see why the kitchen area of the home is typically responsible for fires igniting within the home.

The most important thing to do is have an affective evacuation plan for the earth quake itself and then the aftermath as well. In California many of the people started looting because they were in search of food and provisions. With much of the infrastructure down, California became a mess in a hurry. This is something that can be avoided by having a good 72 hour kit that can sustain you and your family and not make you go out in search of the necessities.
